Tribute to the New Orleans R\'n\'B and funk master

Pianiste-chanteur-compositeur-producteur, Allen Toussaint est indissociable de la musique de la Nouvelle-Orleans, berceaux du jazz et du rhythm and blues louisianais. Pratiquement tous les instrumentistes et chanteurs locaux ont travaillé avec lui.
Son style immédiatement reconnaissable, inspiré du boogie de Fats Domino et Professor Longhair, est emblématique du brassage culturelle unique que représente "Crescent City". Il a produit plus d'une centaine de singles et d'albums depuis 1958 sur une myriade de labels, (Tou-Sea, Sansu, Deesu or Kansu), notamment pour les mythiques Meters (qui l'accompagnent sur de nombreux titres), Dr John, les frères Neville. Parmis les albums enregistrés sous son nom citons les indispensables Toussaint (1971) Life, Love And Faith (1972) Southern Nights (1975) et Motion (1978). Le succès phénoménale de l'album "Nightbirds" de Labelle en 1974 (avec le hit "Lady Marmelade") n'est qu'un signe de son influence sur la musique populaire américaine.
Ce mix est un aperçu des productions rhythm and blues et funk d'Allen Toussaint entre 1958 et 1978.

African Fiesta par Les Disques du Président

A journey to 60\'s and 70\'s music from Congo, Guinea, Senegal and Burkina Faso

A special moment in African history when new nations asserted theirselves and placed music at the forefront of their identities.

• Tabu Ley Rochereau is the leader of Orchestre Afrisa International and one of Africa's most influential vocalists and prolific songwriters. Along with guitarist Dr Nico Kasanda, Tabu Ley pioneered soukous; he internationalised his music by fusing elements of Congolese folk music with Cuban, Caribbean, and Latin American rumba.
• TPOK Jazz, short for Tout Puissant Orchestre Kinshasa, literally meaning "the all-powerful Kinshasa band" in French, originally known as OK Jazz, was a Congolese rumba band, founded by Jean Serge Essous and Francois Luambo Makiadi in the 1950s. The original name, OK Jazz, comes from a Kinshasa bar called the OK Bar named after the bar's proprietor "Oscar Kashama", but is also been said to refer to Orchestre Kinois.
• Orchestra Baobab is a Senegalese Afro-Cuban, Son, and Pachanga band. Organized in 1970, as a multi-ethnic, multi-national club band, Orchestre Baobab adapted the then current craze for Cuban Music (growing out of the Congolese Soukous style) in West Africa to Wolof Griot culture and the Mandinga musical traditions of the Casamance. One of the dominant African bands of the 1970s.
• When the French colonial administration pulled out of Guinea in 1958, they took everything: all their medicines, blueprints to the electricity grid, furniture, telephones, even the cutlery. It seemed that the passionate cry of soon-to-be president, Sekou Toure - made while addressing a public rally and standing right next to De Gaulle - of "We prefer freedom in poverty to riches in chains" had become more true than perhaps even he had hoped.
Undaunted and with optimism and vigour, the new government set about rebuilding the country. They established a campaign that encouraged artists to create new works, but based on traditional African roots. The policy was called authenticite, music was its focus and Syliphone its record label.
• Bembaya Jazz National is a Guinean jazz group that gained fame in the 1960s for their infectious Afropop rhythms. They are considered one of the most significant bands in Guinean music. Many of their recordings are based on traditional folk music in the country and have been fused with jazz and Afropop style. Featuring guitarist Sekou 'Diamond Fingers' Diabate, who grew up in a traditional griot musical family, the band won over fans in Conakry, Guinea's capital city, during the heady days of that country's newfound independence.
• By the mid-1970, the Syli Authentic orchestra  was the greatness of Guinean popular music. Disbanded too soon, this band, originally formed by musical students, was of the new generation better hopes, being deeply rooted in the rich mandingo traditional while displaying an insolent modernity.
• Kôrô Tidiane Coulibaly started its musical career in the " Volta jazz ", formerly called " Dynamics jazz ", to Bobo-Dioulasso, in the 1962s. Afterward, it will evolve in "Dafra Star". Titles as "djarabi" had made of the man a legend, especially towards Burkina Faso. It was not thus a surprise for the public when he was carried in the head of the National orchestra.
• We don't know a lot about singer and songwriter Compaoré Youssouf (as it is printed on the label) except that his music is dope and he was playing in Burkina in the late 70's. He released two albums – One with the band The Noble Kings in 1978, and a solo record in 1981. His repertoire consisted of songs in traditional Mossi rhythms mixed with modern pop sounds.
• Asiko was formed in 2003 by the multi-talented singer, designer and percussionist Foly Kolade. Originally from Ogidi, Nigeria, Foly has trained and performed with Roy Ayers, Mariam Makeba and George Benson in Nigeria and New York.

Get Up & Boogie!

Disco, the musical expression of a hedonistic movement, celebrated joyfully partying, sex and drugs. Gay and straight, white, Latinos, blacks, men and women came together without barriers or boundaries. AIDS and the crisis had ended it abruptly and remains only these energetic anthems which I propose a selection.
The disco movement, brought up to date by the edits, permanently influenced dance music. It has been the source of the DJ phenomenon, first singles vinyls (12 inches), remixes, and left us this taste for the big ronflent bass, heavy drum feet, the syncopated charleys and enjoyment without barriers.

Le voyage musical continue avec Bintou Simporé qui rappelle que la world music s'appelait sono mondiale sur Nova. L'émission des nouveaux courants musicaux qui émergent de part le monde a invité le Staycalm! crew pour présenter son projet de DVD musical sur le rap Ouest Africain, "Fangafrika, la voix des sans-voix".

Vous pourrez découvrir quelques titres de la future compilation qui accompagnera le DVD Fangafrika, des témoignages sur le documentaire captés lors de sa projection en avant première à Ouagadougou, en octobre 2006, et une interview rondement menée de Guillaume et Renaud, deux des six membres fondateurs du crew. L'occasion rêvée pour remercier Bintou de se faire l'écho de notre travail et David Commeillas, un compagnon de route dans les méandres des ghettos de Ouagadougou.
